Ocean acidification due to carbon emissions is at highest for 300 million years
the oceans have now reached a level of acidity that has not been reached in the past 300 million years. This is due to carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by the ocean, and it is estimated that at least a third of what humans have emitted has been absorbed already.
this will lead to mass extinction of key species in the ocean ecosystem, and is at this point a certainty.
Alex Rogers, professor of biology at Oxford University, has said: "The health of the ocean is spiralling downwards far more rapidly than we had thought."
